Derwent Valley Weekend

I was recently treated to a weekend in the Derwent Valley, courtesy of good friends at Curringa Farm who were celebrating the completion of new accommodation and a function venue. They kindly put me and a number of other friends up for Friday evening, following an official afternoon opening and a very enjoyable celebration dinner in the new facility.

Oast Houses at Bushy Park

On the way I stopped in at a favourite Derwent Valley spot, the Oast Houses at Bushy Park, which I’ve covered in previous posts, but I never seem to tire of its picturesque possibilities.

This is the view at sunset from the new function centre at Curringa Farm, which has diversified its agricultural activities into tourism, offering sheep shearing demonstrations, farm tours and overnight accommodation in luxurious self-contained cottages overlooking Lake Meadowbank.

Tarraleah Falls

On Saturday I was headed to Queenstown for a work engagement on the Sunday morning, so having the rare luxury of not needing to rush up the Lyell Highway, I stopped at Tarraleah in Tasmania’s Central Highlands to walk to Tarraleah Falls. Apart from a sign near the lookout at the top of the tailrace down to the power station, there is not a lot of information about this walk. It turned out to be around 25-30 minutes each way, pretty easy going on a well-formed track with only a shortish climb down to the falls lookout.
