Valuing public art

Further to the recent article on valuing the arts that I posted, the always engaging and informative Rebecca Fitzgibbon discusses the value of large-scale public art with particular reference to recent public discourse on the topic in Tasmania and further afield in an opinion piece in today’s Mercury newspaper.

Often perceived as a waste of money that could be better spent on more urgent social needs, Rebecca cites various examples where public art has been shown to have delivered real social and economic value, in addition to its intrinsic “art for art’s sake” value.

Well worth a read.
